Osnabrück is a large city in Lower Saxony and the seat of the district of Osnabrück. With a population of around 166 000, it is the fourth largest city in Lower Saxony after Hanover, Braunschweig and Oldenburg. The approximately 28 000 university and college students make up around 14% of the total population. The city developed in the early Middle Ages around the episcopal seat of the diocese of Osnabrück, which was founded in 780 and was located at a junction of ancient trade routes. In the late Middle Ages and early modern times, Osnabrück was a Hanseatic city. Even today, Osnabrück lies at the intersection of important European economic axes.

The Bohnenkamp House in the Botanical Gardens of Osnabrück University, with its Heliconia Hall and the Green School rooms, serves as a cross-generational centre for education and encounters – far beyond the topics of nature and the environment. The 900 square metre, light-flooded building is nestled between the greenhouses and the rainforest house of the Botanical Gardens. The architecture and location of the building offer a unique forum for the public with an interest in science, culture and the environment.
