Göttingen is a lively science city in the middle of Germany. 30,000 students attend the city's universities and shape its young flair.
More than 1000 years of history have left their mark. Medieval churches, half-timbered houses and traditional university buildings characterize the cityscape. Since its foundation in the 18th century, the Georg-August University has produced many important scientists; 44 Nobel Prize winners have studied, taught and researched in Göttingen.
The Alte Mensa is centrally located in Göttingen's city center at Wilhelmsplatz 2 and is within walking distance of the train station.
The building was originally built as a monastery in 1260, which was dissolved after the Reformation in 1533 and transferred to municipal ownership. From 1922 to 2009, it housed Germany's first canteen, which catered for up to 2,000 students a day on two floors. In consultation with the monument protection authority and the city's archaeology department, the property was then thoroughly renovated from the beginning of 2014.
In 2016, the Alte Mensa was reopened as a conference and event venue.

BY CAR
Göttingen can be reached from the north and south on the A7 highway, from the east on the A38 or the A2 via Braunschweig and from the west on the A44 via Kassel or the A30 via Hanover. Drivers should take the A7 "Göttingen" or "Göttingen Nord" exits. It is recommended that you use the hotel parking spaces and walk to the Alte Mensa, as the parking situation in Göttingen's city center is somewhat problematic.
